Breaks
Discover why it happens and how to prevent and fix it!

Cracking and breaking are two different problems when working with air-dry clay. While cracks often develop during drying, breaks usually happen when a piece is too fragile to withstand pressure or impact. It can be frustrating to see your finished project break, but there are ways to prevent damage and repair many broken pieces.
Why Does it Break?
Air-dry clay can become fragile once it has dried completely. Thin sections, delicate details, and narrow connections are especially vulnerable to pressure and impact. If a piece is dropped, bent, or handled too roughly, it can easily snap.
The type of clay, the shape of your project, and how well separate pieces are connected can also affect its strength. Some air-dry clays are naturally more brittle than others, making certain designs more susceptible to breaking.
How to Prevent Breaks
The best way to prevent breaks is to consider the stability of your design and handle your clay carefully, especially after it has dried.
Reinforce delicate areas: Thin parts and narrow connections are more likely to break. Where possible, make these areas slightly thicker or design them with additional support.
Handle with care: Support your project with both hands when moving it, especially if it has delicate details or protruding parts.
Let it dry completely: Make sure your project is fully dry before sanding, painting, or handling it extensively. However, keep in mind that fully dried air-dry clay can still be brittle.
Avoid bending dried clay. Air-dry clay can warp slightly as it dries. Trying to straighten a piece once it has started to harden can cause it to snap. Make sure your project is shaped correctly while the clay is still workable, and avoid forcing it back into shape once it has hardened.
How to Fix Broken Clay
Did a piece break despite your best efforts? Don't worry! Depending on the type of break and the shape of your project, you may still be able to repair it.
For clean breaks: Apply a suitable glue to the broken edges, press the pieces together, and allow the glue to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.
To smooth the repair: Once the glue is fully dry, gently sand the repaired area to make the seam less visible.
Keep in mind that repaired pieces may not be as strong as the original. Handle them carefully, especially if the repaired area will be exposed to pressure or frequent movement.
Don't be discouraged by a broken project! Every experience helps you understand your materials better and create more durable designs in the future.

I recently had both fins break off my whale shark brush holder. Luckily, I was able to glue them back on using a German glue. After carefully painting the fins, I managed to hide both repair marks completely from the front.

The UV resin also helped create a smoother surface by filling in small imperfections. This experience showed me that the final result depends not only on the glue but also on the shape and size of the broken edges. Since UHU glue may not be available everywhere, other glues would need to be tested to find suitable alternatives for repairing air-dry clay.
